Steep and rocky terrain presented challenges during construction of Goyder South Wind Farm – particularly during the installation of the underground 33kV reticulation network.

Descending slopes with heavy equipment and cable trailers posed significant safety risks that could have led to delays and incidents if not carefully managed.

To mitigate these risks, the project team worked closely with the safety team to develop a controlled method of descent, combining the use of dozers with 33kV cable trailers. This collaborative approach ensured cables could be safely and efficiently installed in challenging areas while maintaining strict adherence to safety protocols. Through proactive planning and innovation, the risks associated with working on steep slopes were effectively mitigated, allowing works to progress without incident and maintaining project delivery timelines.

From the outset, the Goyder South team worked closely with the project designers to identify opportunities to optimise construction methodologies and minimise unnecessary diversions. One key lesson learned was the value of collaboratively reviewing cable route alignments to determine the most efficient paths across the site. While the original approach favoured longer detours along access tracks, the team identified that, with the right equipment and safety measures in place, cables could be installed down steeper slopes. This not only reduced construction distances and time but also improved project efficiency and reduced environmental disturbance by limiting the extent of new track development. By engaging early with the design team and taking a practical, field-based approach to route selection, the project demonstrated the importance of maintaining flexibility during delivery and leveraging site-specific conditions to achieve better outcomes for both the client and the environment.
